Uppsala County Council has about 11,000 employees; most of them work within Health Care.
The largest single working place is Uppsala University Hospital (Akademiska sjukhuset) with 8,000
employees and a turnover of 4.5 billion Swedish Crowns. Its main fields of activity are medical
care, teaching and research.
Uppsala University Hospital has 1,100 beds and about 350,000 out patient visits per year. Some 50
clinics serve 2 million people in central Sweden. Some 1,000 physicians, 6,000 other health care
staff and 1,000 people belonging to other professional categories work at Uppsala University Hospital.
Uppsala University Hospital has a number of medical specialities that are unique in Sweden.
Some twenty of these have been defined as national specialities by the National Swedish Board of
Health and Welfare. This means that patients suffering from these diseases are referred here from all over Sweden.
Many patients from other countries also come to Uppsala University Hospital to receive specialised treatment. A special unit called Uppsala Care sells care to patients from all over the world and helps out with the practical arrangements.
